Our Lady Church
Local name: Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk
Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk is the Syrian orthodox church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also called the Church of the Mother of God. The neo-Gothic building has the status of a national monument. Located on the Keizersgracht canal.
It was founded in 1854 by the Redemptorist Fathers, a religious congregation focusing on religious help for the poor and the material. The architect was Theo Molkenboer, one of the greatest religious builders in the Netherlands, who was modeled after the Redemptorist church in Mons in Belgium. In 1985, Redemptorists left the church because of the lack of priests to minister. The temple was purchased by the Syrian Orthodox Church, but masses are also held for Catholics.
