Noordermarkt
Local name: Noordermarkt
Noordermarkt is a square in the Jordaan district, where the famous flea market takes place on Mondays and Saturdays. You can find here books, records, clothes, antiques, jewelry, rugs and many other treasures. Two equally popular grocery stores are adjacent to Noordermarkt: Boerenmarkt and Lindengrachtmarkt.
The square dates from 1616 and was initially called Prinsenmarkt - like the channel where it is located. When the construction of the Noorderkerk church at the square was completed in 1623, it gained its current name. Initially, there was a cemetery around the church, and from 1627 trade began to develop. More and more craftsmen exhibited their products here. From 1845, the market operated regularly every Monday, increasing the number of exhibitors and goods.
In February 1941, a protest against deportations of Jews took place in Noordermarkt Square. This is commemorated by a plaque on the south wall of the Noorderkerk church.
