Museum of the Canals
Local name: Museum van de grachten
Museum of The Canals is a museum housed in a 15th-century house overlooking the Herengracht canal. The facility, through an interesting multimedia exhibition, presents the history of exceptional urban planning in Amsterdam. The exhibition was an initiative of a Dutch industrialist who bought a residence in 2009 and transformed into a museum.
The Canal House show tells the stories of the city before and during the construction of the 17th beltway of Channel C. Digging three main canals - Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, creating dozens of smaller cross canals, as well as building a new fast-growing city, it was not easy in the wet and muddy terrain.
A magnificent miniature house model by the canal, enriched with multimedia presentations and a large urban bypass model are the main attractions of this exhibition. Thanks to them, visitors will learn not only the history of the canal in Amsterdam, but also the social structure of the city, its traditions and spirit.
