Basilica of Saint Nicholas
Local name: Basiliek van de Heilige Nicolaas
The Roman Catholic church represents a combination of two architectural styles: neo-baroque and neo-Gothic. Its facade is decorated with a sculpture of Saint Nicholas, and inside there are impressive, nineteenth-century organs, created by organmaster Wilhelm Sauer. The object is in the register of monuments.
The building was built in 1884-1887. Designed by Adrianus Bleijs, it was the second church dedicated to Saint Nicholas within the Walls. This name referred to the city's oldest defensive walls. The first, Quda Kesla, was taken from Catholics after the Reformation.
In 1999, an expensive restaurant was completed, and in 2012 Pope Benedict XVI raised the church to the status of a smaller basilica.
