Murano Lighthouse

Local name: Faro di Murano

The lighthouse existed on Murano since the days of the Republic of Venice (from the eighth century to 1797). Initially, it was a wooden tower, on the top of which bonfires were lit so that their light illuminated the waters of the lagoon. Its light signals the entrance to the channel leading from the sea to the lagoon.

The current lighthouse was made in Istrian stone in the 1930s. In its lower part you can find two reliefs depicting the Madonna. Black stripes were painted in the upper part of the lighthouse to make it easier to see from the lagoon. The dome of the lighthouse was made entirely of glass.

Initially, the lantern was equipped with an olive lamp, later gas lighting was used here. It was not until the 1960s that the lighting of the lantern was changed to that of electrical origin. Currently, the ignition has been automated and, like all similar objects, this one was also under the navy's control.
