Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta di Torcello

Local name: Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta di Torcello

The Basilica of Saint Mary is located on the Venetian island of Torcello. The church belongs to the largest and oldest religious complex of the Venetian Lagoon. In addition to the temple itself, it includes the remains of the baptistery in front of the church facade, as well as the church of Santa Fosca.

At the main entrance there is a marble stoup from the 11th century with holy water. Both the inner wall of the facade, as well as the vaults and walls of the apse are decorated with valuable mosaics from the 9th - 13th century. The Mystic Lamb mosaic originates from the time the temple was founded. Unfortunately, only the heads of angels survived, while the rest was seriously modified. The largest mosaic of the cathedral is the Last Judgment, which is located on the inner wall of the facade. Influences of Ravenna art can be found on numerous mosaics.

This Roman Catholic temple was built in 639 and until the beginning of the 19th century it was called the cathedral of the Diocese of Torcello. In architectural terms, the church is an excellent example of Venetian-Byzantine style.
