Porta Portese is an ancient city gate at the intersection of Via Portuense and Via Porta Portese in Rome.
The gate was abolished in 1644 as part of the walls of Janiculum Hill, which replaced the Porta Portuensis gate. The gate and walls were built and designed by Vincenzo Maculani at the request of Pope Urban VIII. Just behind the gate in 1714 was the great arsenal of Clement XI.
Porta Portese is located at the beginning of the Via Portuense route, which originally connected the city with the city harbor of Portus.
Until the end of the 19th century, the port of Ripa Grande, the city's main river port, was nearby. A popular flea market takes place around Porta Portese every Sunday.
