The Lateran Obelisk (Obelisco Lateranense) in Rome is the highest monolithic object of this type in the world. Its height is over 31 meters (with a pedestal over 45 meters). It was created in the fifteenth century BC, during the reign of Pharaoh Tutmosis IV, in honor of Tutmosis III.
It was built of red granite in front of the Temple of Amun at Karnak in Egypt. The inscriptions placed on it remind us of its history. Hieroglyphs are arranged among others in Amon's blessing - Re.
The obelisk from Karnakau was transported by ship to Alexandria. Then, in the fourth century, he was brought to Rome, it was an official gift for the Senate and the entire Roman people.
The obelisk crashed into several pieces during the earthquake, it was rebuilt in the 16th century at the behest of Pope Sixtus V. The architect Domenico Fontana supervised the work. At that time, a Christian cross was placed on its top.
