The holy stairs are 28 degrees. They are lined and can only be entered on the knees. They lead to the chapel of San Lorenzo, where now houses the image of Christ Acheiropoietona, which according to the application was painted by Saint Luke and the angels. The 16th century building is located opposite the Basilica of Saint John Lateran. The stairs were brought from Jerusalem to Rome in 326 on the initiative of Saint Helena - mother of Emperor Constantine I.
Legend has it that after those steps coming from the house of Pontius Pilate, Jesus Christ was led to court.
Pius VII, on September 2, 1817, granted those who climb the stairs in a certain way the indulgence of nine years for each step. Finally, Pius X, February 26, 1908, granted a plenary indulgence to those who piously climbed the stairs after confession and communion.
