The church Jan Kalibita was built in the second half 16th century on the ruins of an ancient temple. During its construction, the remains of the patron were discovered along with the relics of other Italian saints. The object is famous for its richly decorated interior by Corrado Giaquinto, which captivates not only admirers of sacred art.
In the church you can admire the enigmatic 13th-century painting - 'Madonna della lampada'. According to legend, the image was once left on the river bank along with a lit votive lamp. Water flooded the shore and grabbed the painting with the current. The lamp, however, was still burning, despite being submerged in the river.
The first church was built by Genzeryk's soldiers on the site of the former Jupiter's temple. This building was rebuilt in the 5th century by order of the bishop of Porto. The building and the adjoining monastery belonged to the Benedictine sisters for centuries.
