The Basilica of Saint Lawrence behind the Walls (Basilica San Lorenzo al Verano or Papale Basilica di San Lorenzo fuori le mura) is famous for the relics of St. Wawrzyniec and Szczepan. Two ancient sarcophagi were placed in the portico.
The basilica was built during the reign of Emperor Constantine, it was at the beginning of the 4th century. In the 5th century a second temple was established, the initiators of its construction were Pope Sixtus III and the daughter of Emperor Theodosius. In the thirteenth century, both buildings were joined, the older building began to function as a presbytery.
Famous people are buried in the basilica, including Pope Damascus II, Pope Pius IX and Prime Minister of Italy Alcide de Gasperi. Near the church there is the Campo Verano cemetery, divided into two parts - Jewish and Catholic. A monument was also erected here to honor the victims of World War I.
