Riva del Garda is a lake on the northern shores of Lake Garda. It is surrounded by the Dolomites, which offer many opportunities to spend time actively, and additionally, it is an exceptionally picturesque city full of monuments.
The history of the city, as well as of the entire region, is long and turbulent. Situated on the border of Italian, Austrian and French influences, Trento, also known as Alto Adige, has been the object of wars and conflicts for centuries. Its nationality was changing, and it was followed by invasions. It was not until the 20th century that it calmed down.
However, already in the mid-nineteenth century, the area around Lake Garda began to develop as a tourist destination. On the one hand, you could relax on the beaches by the lake, and on the other hand, hike in the mountains. This connection is evident in Riva del Garda tourism to this day.
The city is situated on the shores of lakes and rests on the steep slopes of the mountains. Historic buildings, beautiful villas, a charming harbor, small squares and lots of greenery are good characteristics of this beautiful corner. At the port square, you can see colorful houses and a medieval belfry - the Apponale Tower. The walls of the Rocca castle, built in the 12th century by the owners of the town, the Scaglieri family, rise above the water. Today it houses the MAG Alto Garda Museum, which shows the history and culture of the region.
The main attraction of Riva del Garda is the boulevard leading to several nice beaches. The most popular is the gravel beach of Sabbioni, but there are also grassy beaches, some shaded by small groves. They have good facilities and you can also rent water equipment next door including pedalos and kayaks. On the lake, you can also go on a cruise ship to admire the surrounding mountains.
And these also offer many leisure activities. Hiking along a dense network of hiking trails, via ferrata trails with security ropes, ladders and clamps, as well as more difficult climbing routes make Riva del Garda a perfect base for enthusiasts of mountain activities.
