Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio

Local name: Basilica di Sant'Eustorgio

The Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio is a church in Milan located in the city park Basilicas Park. For many years it was an important stop for pilgrims on their journey to Rome or to the Holy Land, because it was believed that the tomb of the Three Kings was there. In the church you can see the relics of the Three Kings, frescoes from the Giotto school, tombs of the Visconti family, the main altar from the 15th century, the image of the Crucifixion from the 13th century, the marble tomb of Giovanni di Balduccio, frescoes by Vincenzo Foppy and the Renaissance chapel of Portinari.

The basilica was built in the 4th century. It is dedicated to Saint Eustorgius I, Bishop of Milan, who is credited with bringing the remains of the Three Kings from Constantinople in 344. In later years the church was rebuilt in the Romanesque style. The current facade is a reconstruction from the nineteenth century. In the 12th century, the relics of the Magi were taken by Frederick Barbarossa, they returned to the basilica only at the beginning of the 20th century.
