MALCESINE tourist attractions

+10 attractions

Malcesine is a resort on Lake Garda, valued for its historic buildings, intimate character and the possibility of combining active relaxation with rest on the beach. Mount Monte Baldo rises above the city and can be reached by cable car.

In the past, Malcesine was primarily a fishing village, which is reminiscent of the local small port, where fishermen's boats still moor alongside cruise boats and small yachts. Today, however, mainly ships depart from here, carrying tourists to other famous towns on the Garda, such as Riva del Garda and for sightseeing cruises.

Tourists arriving in Malcesine are enchanted by the local intimate Old Town that flows smoothly with the port. Colorful tenement houses from different eras stand here along narrow, cobbled streets. An important monument is the Scaliger Castle standing on a rocky promontory. Its origins date back to the 6th century, and its present appearance is due to the reconstruction carried out by the Scaglieri family in the 14th century. Today, the castle houses the Natural History Museum. It is also a good viewpoint over Lake Garda.

The main attraction of Malcesine is the spectacular Malcesine - Monte Baldo Cable Car. It is the only such railway whose carriages turn around during the journey. The route consists of two parts with the San Michele intermediate station. The top stop is at 1,800 meters above sea level. From here you can go for a walk to the top of Monte Baldo - Cima di Valdritta 2218 meters, which offers great views of Lake Garda.
