Guardiagrele is a small historic town that is often referred to as the "terrace of Abruzzo". It is situated on a mountain slope and offers a beautiful view of the surroundings.
Around Guardiagrel are the Maiella Mountains belonging to the Apennines. They are a popular hiking area. The local forests and mountain meadows guarantee hiking in beautiful surroundings at any time of the year.
The town has a well-preserved historic center located in the highest part of the hill. Its main monument is the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, where you can see 15th-century frescoes and a sculpture depicting the scene of the Coronation of the Mother of God. Stone houses stand next to the narrow cobbled streets. Among them, you can find other local churches, including the Church of St. Nicholas, whose origins date back to the 4th century.
Among the attractions of Guardiagrele are also the local museums. In the Municipal Museum you can see collections related to the history of the city, and the Museum of Folklore and Costumes presents the traditions and activities of the former inhabitants of the region.
