Gressoney-Saint-Jean is a small village in the Pennine Alps, known for its neo-Gothic castle of the Savoy Dynasty. Its location in the famous Monterosa ski region makes it a good base for those who like to spend time on the slopes.
The town has medieval roots and is inhabited by a German-speaking community that came here hundreds of years ago. A specific culture has developed here and a dialect that is also spoken in Switzerland. The town has nice, traditional buildings with a 16th-century church and picturesque houses.
The greatest attraction of Gressoney-Saint-Jean is the 19th century neo-Gothic Savoia Castle perched above the Aosta Valley. It was a summer palace of the Savoy dynasty, stylistically referring to the medieval Lombard castles. Inside, you can see collections of ceramics, knick-knacks and handicrafts, as well as royal apartments, fully furnished. The castle is surrounded by a landscaped park with the botanical garden of the Savoia Castle.
The Gressoney-Saint-Jean area is famous for skiing. The Monterosa area offers downhill runs of various difficulty levels, both for skiing and snowboarding, access to snow parks and numerous apres-ski attractions.
