Fermo is a historic town situated picturesquely on a hill, not far from the Adriatic coast. The historic center has a lot of charm and is also a good viewpoint over the surrounding area.
Miaro was founded in Etruscan times and was then conquered by the Romans. To this day, an ancient theater has been preserved here, as well as underground cisterns in which water was stored. After its fall during the migration of peoples, Fermo revived in the Middle Ages as a center on the border of the Papal States and the influence of the secular Italian states. For this reason, it has been the subject of disputes and wars many times.
The oldest part of the city is at the highest point of the hill. It is dominated by the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There are over 20 churches within the small Old Town. Most of them were built between the 16th and 18th centuries, when Fermo was under the authority of the popes.
Fermo's main square, Piazza del Popolo, is surrounded by city palaces and representative tenement houses. Today there are many restaurants and cafes. You can take shelter from the sun in the shades. There are narrow streets, alleys and small squares all around, where you can feel the atmosphere of an Italian small town.
