Béla Czóbel Museum

Local name: Czóbel Béla Múzeum

The Béla Czóbel Museum is entirely devoted to this Hungarian painter. The museum has one permanent exhibition, which has existed almost unchanged from the beginning of the museum's existence. In addition, temporary exhibitions are organized, presenting the work of Béla Czóbel from different perspectives, against the background of other artists, artistic trends, as well as other fields of art. The museum is based in the L-shaped building, which was built in the nineteenth century as a school building. In the vestibule of the museum you can see a statue of the artist by Imre Varga.

Béla Czóbel (1883-1976) represents Hungarian avant-garde painting. At a very young age, he gained recognition in the country and abroad, he had a great impact on shaping trends in Hungarian painting. He created in Hungary and France. From the 1940s he lived in Szentendre, where in 1975 a museum dedicated to his work was opened. He is the only artist in Hungary for whom the museum was created while he was still alive.
