The Bálint Balassi Museum in Ostrzyhom is a branch of the Hungarian National Museum. He collects exhibits related to the history of Hungary and Ostrzyhom since the earliest times, and also documents folklore, culture and way of life in the region. The museum's extensive collections can be viewed as part of its permanent exhibitions, but are also loaned to other museums and institutions. Currently, the museum is based in a Baroque building.
The Bálint Balassi Museum has a long history, dating back to the mid-nineteenth century, when in the Benedictine Middle School began to collect old coins and other antique items originating, among others. from the collections of historian Nándor Knauz. In 1898 a real museum was created. In 1949 it received the name "Bálint Balassi Museum" in honor of one of the first significant poets writing in Hungarian. The contemporary seat of the museum is a building from the 18th century, which until 1830 served as the city hall.
