Eger belongs to the most beautiful and attractive tourist cities of northern Hungary. It lies at the foot of the Bükk Mountains and hot springs used here for bathing. The city also has a well-preserved Baroque old town and is famous for its wine production.
The beginnings of the city are connected with the establishment of the bishopric in the 11th century by Stefan the Great. Today's cathedral, however, is much later and dates from the eighteenth century. It is one of the most magnificent neoclassical buildings in Hungary. A city grew around the seat of the bishops, which was fortified by the construction of a fortress to defend against Turkish invasions.
Today, the fortress on the hill is known, among others from the heroic 40 days of defense by Istvan Dobo's troops, 1552 is the seat of the museum and an excellent vantage point of the city. Below it extends the baroque Old Town with cobbled streets and colorful tenements with decorative facades. There are many restaurants and wine bars.
Outside the center there is a modern thermal swimming pool and spa park. It is a popular place for walks, and the thermal baths with aquapark are a relaxing base for patients and tourists coming to Eger.
Eger is also famous for the wine called "bull's blood" or Egri Bikaver. The center of its production is the Beautiful Lady Valley, where there are several dozen cellars, where you can taste and buy different types of Eggerian wine.
