Heves County is located in northern Hungary and includes the Hungarian Highland with the Bükk and Matra Mountains. It is characterized by a very diverse landscape with wooded mountains and limestone rocks. Its capital is the historic Eger.
The region is one of the most beautiful in terms of landscape in Hungary. The forested Beech Mountains abound in places where you can go hiking. The highest peak of Hungary, Kékestető, 1014 m above sea level rises in the Matra mountains
The capital of the region and at the same time its most famous city is Eger. A medieval fortress rises above the charming old town with cobbled streets, and slightly out of the way you can find a neoclassical powerful cathedral, which dates back to the 11th century. Eger is also a well-known resort with thermal baths and a wine production center, which can be tasted in the cellars in the Valley of the Beautiful Lady .
Heves is a place where you can admire numerous castles and palaces scattered around smaller towns. The most important are the residences in Szilvásvárad, Erdotelek, Matraderecske, Noszvaj and Hatvan. In Belapatfalva there is a Romanesque Cistercian abbey.
