Šomoška Castle

Local name: Hrad Šomoška

Somoska Castle is located on the Slovak-Hungarian border. These are the ruins of a Gothic fortress, from which one tower and a fragment of the walls were rebuilt. At its top there is a viewing terrace. The castle stands on top of a basalt hill, and there is a geological attraction nearby - a rock, basalt waterfall.

Somoska Castle was built at the end of the 13th century. He was one of the Hungarian fortresses that were to defend the country against the Turkish threat. It was destroyed in the 18th century by the Habsburgs, when it was one of the headquarters of the anti-Habsburg kuruc. Blown up, it remained in complete ruin until the second half of the 20th century.

During the conservation works, the tower was rebuilt, making it a lookout point to the surrounding area. Around the castle, a geological educational trail was created, leading, among others, to a rock waterfall unique on a European scale, created by solidifying lava flows.
