The ruins of the Gothic Divín Castle are located near the Ružina reservoir. Only the remains of some walls, along with window openings and arrowslits, have survived to modern times. The stronghold served mainly a defensive function (especially during the fights with the Turks), it also protected the road to the Central-Slovak mining area.
The castle was built at the end of the 13th century. The building became famous in the second half of the 17th century thanks to the owner of the property, Imrich Balassa. He attacked and then robbed nearby towns. After his death in 1683, the castle was occupied by the imperial army and destroyed.
When visiting the ruins, it is also worth visiting the town of Divín. Here you can find a Renaissance fortified palace, a Baroque church and a presbytery with the oldest sundial in Novohrad.
