Liciumfa, or literally "lycium tree", is a botanical curiosity in the form of lycium, which has grown into the shape of a tree, which is very rare. This plant is also known in Hungarian as ördögcérna, or the devil's thread. She is over 200 years old. For the residents of Debrecen, it symbolizes the reformation period and Calvinism. A popular saying is that Liciumfa is "neither tree nor grass."
According to legend, in the place where Liciumfa stands today, the Christian canon Ambrosius and the Protestant pastor Bálint discussed. The canon doubted that Calvinists would ever form a real religious community. Holding a twig of lycium in his hands, he said that it was only when a tree grew out of Caldera that Calvinism would be a true religion. The pastor replied that this would be the case and drove the branch into the ground. The gooseberry has grown in and resembled a tree, which is why it became a symbol of Calvinists.
