The church was built in the 11th century. It is one of the most important Byzantine monuments in Athens. The presbytery and the front part of the nave, built on a cross plan, are adjacent to a massive, rectangular nave. Inside there are columns built from fragments of ancient buildings. Ancient architectural elements can also be seen in the outer walls.
