Arta is a city of ancient origins with many interesting monuments from the Roman and Byzantine eras. There are, among others one of the most famous ancient bridges in Greece.

In ancient times, the city was called Ambracia and developed under Macedonian rule. However, it experienced its greatest prosperity when, from the middle of the 2nd century BC, it came under the authority of Rome. It is from this time that the ruins of the Temple of Apollo and a small theater come from. A Roman monument is also the famous Bridge in Art, one of the greatest attractions of the city.

Arta was also of great importance in the Middle Ages, when these lands belonged to the Byzantine Empire. There are now many valuable monuments from that period. The most important of them is the cathedral Parigoritissa from the 13th century with frescoes and mosaics from the period from the 14th to the 16th century. Among other interesting churches from this time, the Church of St. Basil on the Agora and the 11th century Church of St. Theodora.

In the modern exhibition building built in 2009, you can see the Art Archaeological Collection with exhibitions presenting the history of the city in the Roman and Byzantine periods.
