The national park covers a vast area between 144 and 2429 meters above sea level. It includes a variety of habitats, including deciduous, mixed and fir forests, alpine meadows and gorges. Within it, three areas included in the international protection program Natura 2000 were designated.
The park is a great place for hiking. There are more than 30 trails and tourist routes of varying difficulty in it. Some are family-friendly, while others are only intended for experienced mountaineers.
There are 30 species of mammals in the park, i.e. a quarter of all species found in the country. They include bears, deer, chamois and several species of bats. There are also 150 species of birds and 19 species of reptiles, including 10 species of snakes.
