The Museum of Culture and Nature consists of three objects. The first is the Kaltehofe industrial monument, which consists of a historic laboratory building and filtration installation. Further areas of the Museum include the Kaltehofe Ecological Nature Trail and the Water Art Museum.
The monument presents the history of the Kaltehofe filtration plant, which in turn is an integral part of Hamburg's history. At the end of the 19th century, in the face of the worst cholera epidemic, the Hamburg Senate decided to create one of the most modern and beautiful sewage treatment plants in Europe.
The Kaltehofe Nature Trail presents 281 native plant species. During the breeding season, 44 species of birds live there. By using this educational path, visitors can learn more about the nature of the area, resulting largely as a result of the transformation of an industrial plant into an ecologically valuable park.
The museum of water art introduces visitors to the history, symbolism and architecture of the city's major water facilities, both existing and destroyed as a result of the war.
