The museum was founded in 1874 and was modeled on the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In 1877, it was moved to its current headquarters, a building on Steintorplatz, built in 1873-1875. The original plan was to collect and present both historical and contemporary works of art and craft. The museum was to become a kind of encyclopedic collection of artifacts from the history of culture, recording 4,000 years of human creativity and creativity.
