Cathedral Museum

Local name: Dommuseum

Dommuseum Frankfurt is the Cathedral Museum in the cathedral of St. Bartholomew, founded in 1987. The permanent exhibition is devoted to sacred art and the history of the cathedral, where many important events took place, including imperial and royal coronations. There are temporary exhibition halls in the basement, used to present contemporary art.

The most valuable objects of the permanent exhibition include the burial of a woman from the Merovingian dynasty discovered during the renovation of the cathedral, dated 680. Extremely valuable historically and for believers is the 18th-century reliquary with the skull of the Apostle Bartholomew (Natanael) - the only apostolic relic in Germany. An important part of the collection are vestments and liturgical items, the oldest of which date from the fourteenth century

Temporary exhibitions are devoted to presenting the achievements of specific artists or presenting important historical events. One of them was Dombrand, i.e. the great fire of the cathedral on August 15, 1867.
