Knoblauchhaus Museum

Local name: Museum Knoblauchhaus

The former residence of the Knoblauch family is one of the few preserved burgher houses from the 18th century in Berlin. Since 1989, the building houses a museum dedicated to the life of Berlin during the Biedermeier period. The faithfully restored residential and commercial spaces contain original furniture, porcelain, works of art, photos and letters.

The three-story corner house in the late Baroque style was built in 1759 on behalf of the needle manufacturer - Johann Christian Knoblauch. His son, Carl Friedrich, opened a store with canvas, cloth and silk on the ground floor of the building. Several city councilors, architect Eduard Knoblauch and founder of the Czech Brewery Armand Knoblauch also come from the Knoblauch family.

Biedermeier is a style in art, music, literature and interior architecture developed primarily in Germany and Austria between 1819 and 1848. Its main assumption was the art of burghers for burghers.
