Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer is a museum dedicated to the memory of the Berlin Wall. It consists of a 70-meter section of an authentic wall, a memorial site (presenting thematic exhibitions), a documentation center and the Chapel of Reconciliation. The entire area of Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer can be viewed from the observation tower erected in 2003.
The Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer has been exhibiting since 2001 the exhibition "Berlin, 13 August 1961". It refers to the famous night from 12 to 13 August 1961, when about 15,000 officers of the German Border Police and other military units blocked transport connections with the western part of Berlin. From that moment the erection of the wall began, which divided Berlin for the next 28 years.
In 2010, the so-called memory window - a 12-meter wall, made of naturally corrosive steel, in which rectangular holes with photographs of 130 people who died during attempts to cross the wall were placed.
