Villefranche-de-Rouergue is a small town with a well-preserved historic center.
The heart of Villefranche-de-Rouergue is the Notre-Dame square surrounded by tenement houses with arcades. The most important monument in the city, the Gothic Church of Notre-Dame, stands right next to it. The streets around the collegiate church and the main square are filled with stone houses, the oldest of which date back to the 13th century. Today, many of them have restaurants and shops with local products. A valuable monument of engineering art is the 14th century Consul Bridge on the Aveyron River.
An important attraction of Villefranche-de-Rouergue is the former Carthusian monastery located on the outskirts of the town, one of the largest such buildings in France. It is currently open to the public.
