The Henri de Toulouse-Lautreca Museum is housed in a former bishop's palace in Albi. There is the world's largest collection of paintings and graphics by this artist. Thanks to this, the museum is one of the most visited museums in France outside of Paris.
The museum was founded in 1922. At that time, the counts of Toulouse-Lautrec, the painter's parents, gave the state his painting heritage. It covers about 1,000 works, including a complete collection of all of his lithography posters.
The museum is based in the 13th century bishop's palace. It is a defensive structure, which was adapted for exhibition purposes at the end of the 20th century. Under the palace, among others, an underground auditorium was built. The permanent exhibition shows a cross-section of Toulouse-Lautrec's artistic output. Temporary contemporary art exhibitions are shown on the upper floor.
