Saint-Raphaël is a resort on the Cote d'Azur, known primarily for its sandy beaches. The surrounding coast is full of picturesque coves, and the city can also be a base for exploring this picturesque region.
The recreational values of Saint-Raphaël were known already in antiquity. Dignitaries had their villas here at a time when these lands belonged to the Roman Empire. From the Middle Ages, mainly fishing and local trade developed here. It was not until the 18th century that Saint-Raphaël became a place of rest again. The first summer vacationers appeared, and the seaside town began to develop as a resort.
Today, Saint-Raphaël's main attraction is its beaches. The old town is small and is surrounded by modern hotels, apartment buildings and guesthouses. The wide, sandy beach offers the possibility of peaceful relaxation, as well as excellent facilities, numerous bars and beach entertainment. It is surrounded by a promenade, as well as a 19th-century casino and luxurious villas from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The coast around Saint-Raphaël is full of headlands, coves and cliffs. It is very scenic, and you can find less frequented, small beaches here. They include the coves of calanques - Anthéor with a small, sandy beach and the extremely picturesque Calanque Saint-Barthélémy, above which there is a viewpoint.
