The temple from 1887 in the Byzantine-Moorish style was designed by Pierre Aublé, who was inspired by the famous Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The full name - Basilica of Our Lady of Victory of Lepanto - refers to one of the bloodiest naval battles in world history, in which the Catholic countries defeated the Ottoman Empire in 1571.
