Saint-Martin-de-Ré is the historic capital of Ile de Re, and is now a picturesque seaside town with perfectly preserved historic fortifications.
The city developed from the Middle Ages as a port on the strategically located island of Ile de Re. In the 17th century, when La Rochelle on the mainland became the main Huguenot stronghold, it was fortified on the orders of Cardinal Richelieu. Today, when visiting Saint-Martin-de-Ré, you can see the citadel and defensive walls preserved in large fragments. In addition to the fortifications, the historic attractions of the city are picturesque half-timbered houses from the 16th century and Renaissance tenement houses.
Today Saint-Martin-de-Ré is a lively city with many restaurants, cafes and bars in the summer season. They are located in historic houses and complement the unique atmosphere of this place.
