The first fortified structure was built on this site in the 11th century in order to control the traffic of ships in the Charente estuary and to collect customs duties. The fortress was extended to its present form in the 15th century, and at the end of the 17th century, François Ferry transformed it into the residence of Louis XIV. Currently, it is the seat of the regional history museum.
