National Museum of Immigration History
Local name: Musée national de l'histoire de l'immigration
The Immigration History Museum is housed in the Palais de la Porte Dorée building. It is devoted to the contribution of immigrants to the development of France and its society. It presents photos, images, everyday objects, documents and multimedia related to the presence of people from other continents in French society.
The Palais de la Porte Dorée was built for the Great Colonial Exhibition, which took place in Paris in 1931. It is one of the icons of the art deco style, with a magnificent facade decorated with columns and spacious interiors. Initially, it housed a colonial museum, renamed the Museum of Africa and Oceania. The Museum of Immigration History has been operating here since 2007.
The museum shows the main immigrant groups that have come to France for centuries. The figures of famous immigrants are also presented, without which it is difficult to imagine contemporary French culture.
