Canet-en-Roussillon is a seaside resort on the Mediterranean Sea. There is a sandy beach, marked with the Blue Flag sign, and a large marina for yachts and sailing boats.
The city was founded in the Middle Ages and was primarily a fishing and trading town. In the first half of the nineteenth century, when the popularity of seaside holidays began to grow, Canet-en-Roussillon became the first place in Occitania where a bathing place was organized. At that time, the medieval city walls were also demolished, and a wide boulevard was marked out by the sea.
The main attraction of Canet-en-Roussillon is the sandy, wide beach here. It is very clean and the sea here is quite shallow and calm. It is a great place to stay with children. There are hotels next to the beach, some of which have separate sections of the beach with sunbeds and umbrellas. At its end there is a port with a large marina, which is filled with yachts and boats from all over the world during the season.
Most of the city has modern buildings, but a medieval castle with Romanesque elements has been preserved on a hill, far from the sea. While visiting Canet-en-Roussillon, you can also see the 19th-century estate Château de l'Esparrou and the remains of historic fishing buildings.
