Argelès-sur-Mer is a small, relatively quiet resort on the Mediterranean Sea. It has a sandy beach several kilometers long, a wide promenade and a small, picturesque Old Town.
Until the mid-twentieth century, Argelès-sur-Mer was primarily a fishing village, although the first holidaymakers had come here a hundred years earlier. However, it was only the post-war tourism boom that caused its growing popularity.
The main attraction of Argelès-sur-Mer is the 7 km long wide, sandy beach. The vast majority of it is well developed, with restaurants and bars operating in the season, as well as recreational equipment rentals. In the vicinity of the beach, there is a several-kilometer-long promenade that turns into a city promenade full of restaurants, bars and shops. There is also a large marina close to the beach.
The historic center of Argelès-sur-Mer is small. There you can see several old churches, mainly from the Middle Ages, the 13th-century Pujols Castle and historic tenement houses. In turn, there are several prehistoric dolmens in the vicinity of the city, the most famous of which is Collets de Cotlliure.
