Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Local name: Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie

The church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the main temple of the premonstratens monastic complex in Strahov, Prague. Among the monuments are the Chapel of St. Norbert with relics of St. Norbert and St. Urszula, the chapel of Our Lady of Pasavska, the tomb of Henryk Pappenheim, the fresco with the Viennese Victorian, the main altar and the ten altars.

The construction of the first Romanesque basilica began in the 12th century. It was a building with a main aisle of 56 m in length, a 22 m long transept and two towering towers. However, after the fire that ruined the Temple of the Year, it was destroyed. The church was rebuilt in Gothic and Renaissance style.

Between 1743 and 1752 the temple was rebuilt by Anselmo Lurago in Baroque style. Woflgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1774. During the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was elevated to the status of a smaller basilica.
