FAMAGUSTA tourist attractions

+1 attraction

Famagusta is one of the most important tourist resorts of Northern Cyprus. It is a city where you can see the eternal mixing and coexistence of different cultures, while the area is famous for its wonderful nature.

The area around the city was already inhabited in antiquity, and the archaeological complex covering the ruins of former Salamis is a reminder of those times. One of the largest naval battles in the history of ancient Greece took place nearby, and at the site you can see the ruins of the temple of Zeus, houses and the agora.

The Old Town in Famagusta is surrounded by a double ring of defensive walls erected by the Venetians to defend against the Turks. Today you can walk on them, admiring the panorama of the city.

The testament to the multicultural history of the city is the cathedral of St. Nicholas. Built in the Gothic style during the Venetian rule, it was transformed into a mosque after the Turkish invasion. To this day, it serves Islam followers who pray in gothic, cathedral interiors. Nearby you can see the ruins of the former Franciscan monastery.

The surroundings of Famagusta are known for their beautiful landscapes. The most popular trip destination is the Karpas Peninsula with wild beaches, dunes and crystal clear water. The interior of the peninsula, nearly 100 km long, is covered by fallow olive groves and arable fields, and many rare species of birds and insects live here.
