Muzej grada Šibenik, or the City Museum of Šibenik is located in the old part of the city in the Rectors Palace - the former seat of the city authorities. On permanent exhibitions exhibits documenting the history of the city from the 6th millennium BC to the end of the 18th century, i.e. until the fall of the Venetian Republic, are presented. The museum was established in 1925 on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the Kingdom of Croatia.
A separate exhibition is dedicated to the rulers of Croatia from the time of the Croatian-Hungarian Kingdom (XI-XV centuries). You can see rare examples of Romanesque art from the 13th century and the 14th century polyptych of the famous Venetian painter Paolo Venezian. The exhibition is equipped with numerous multimedia, thanks to which visitors have the opportunity to hear, among others the oldest known poem-prayer that was made in Šibenik.
An interesting fact is the multimedia reconstruction of the destruction of Šibenik from 1378 during the war of the Venetian Republic against the Republic of Genoa. The Venetian Admiral Vettor Pisani captured and burned the city, which since then remained under the control of Venice until 1797.
