The island of Visovac lies on the lake of the same name and is part of the Krka National Park. The island has an oval shape measuring about 170 by 120 meters, and its coast is over 17 kilometers long. Visovac is one of the most popular elements of the National Park because of the historic Franciscan monastery located here, known as the Visovac Monastery.
The island was settled in the fourteenth century by the Augustinian order, who built a monastery and a church of the Apostle Paul here. The oldest preserved buildings on the island come from this period. In the mid-fifteenth century, the complex was taken over and rebuilt by the Franciscans who came here from Bosnia, fleeing the Turks. In the eighteenth century, a new monastery was established here, which still exists today.
The monastery houses a museum in which visitors can learn about the history of the order and the local complex. The museum's collections include liturgical items as well as valuable documents, books and manuscripts.
