Tjentište is a small village in the heart of the Sutjeska National Park. It is known primarily from the monumental monument commemorating the victorious battle fought by guerrilla troops led by Josip Broz Tito with the Axis troops.
The village consists of only a few houses, pensions and a camping, but due to its location it is a good point for hiking in the surrounding mountains in the Sutjeska National Park.
The area around Tjentište is known primarily from the battle of Yugoslav partisan units with the combined forces of Germany and their allies in 1943. This was a turning point for the fighting in Yugoslavia because six times smaller guerrilla forces managed to break free from the German encirclement. This gave rise to the liberation of the country, and in the post-war period the anniversary of the Battle of Sutjeska was one of the most celebrated national celebrations.
The memento of the battle is the monumental monument standing in Tjentište by Miodrag Živković. In its vicinity there is also the Memorial House with exhibitions devoted to the battle and Yugoslavian partisans, and the so-called Valley of Heroes.
