The park is located between the main building of the University of Vienna and the votive church. It's the perfect place for a picnic, close to the city center, but far from the hustle and bustle. There are several stands offering meals and drinks. Every day, 100 couches are brought to the property, which are available to walkers throughout the day.
The park was designed in the 1870s after the votive church was built. In 1961 the building underwent a major renovation due to the construction of an underground car park and the Schottentor Passage. It was not until 1984 that the park was named after Sigmund Freud.
In 1997, the European Union planted a circle of trees on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. Each tree symbolizing a different country that is a member of the EU.
