Petersfriedhof, or St. Peter's Cemetery, is the oldest cemetery in Salzburg. It adjoins the monastery of St. Peter and, like the monastery itself, has its origins at the turn of the seventh and eighth centuries. The oldest gravestone preserved to this day is from 1288. Famous people who rest here belong to, among others architect Snatino Solari, Maria Anna Mozart (elder sister of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) and composer Michael Haydn.
The cemetery also includes catacombs that were carved out directly in the rock. Inside there are two chapels: Saint Gertrude and Saint Maximus. They were consecrated in the second half of the 12th century.
The cemetery was closed in 1878. Abandoned and neglected, it slowly began to fall into ruin. This condition continued until the 1930s, when the Benedictines reopened and restored the cemetery. Burials have also begun here again.
