The Franciscan Church is one of the oldest churches in Salzburg, and as a result of repeated rebuilding and expansion it currently represents a very eclectic style combining elements from different periods. Inside the temple, it is worth paying attention to the intricate vault, as well as the richly decorated altar and the medieval figure of the Madonna by the Italian sculptor Michael Pacher.
The history of the currently existing building dates back to the 12th century, but four centuries earlier the first church was built here. It was destroyed in a fire, so a new temple in the Romanesque style was built. In the 16th century, reconstruction was made in the Gothic style and a tower was added. The tower was dismantled in 1670 because it was higher than the tower of the Salzburg cathedral, but Joseph Wessiken rebuilt it two centuries later in the neo-Gothic style. In turn, the interior of the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 18th century.
