The National Art Gallery in Tirana is located in the city center on the Boulevard of Martyrs. It is the largest and most important Albanian art museum. You can see here a collection of Byzantine painting, socialist realist art and contemporary Albanian art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Art collections began to be collected in Tirana after the end of World War II. Initially, as part of the Figurative Art Gallery, whose name was changed in 1992 to the National Art Gallery. Her collections are not among the largest. About 2,200 exhibits have been collected here. They mainly present Albanian art from the 19th and 20th centuries. To a large extent, these are social realist paintings. At the beginning of the 21st century, an exhibition presenting icons from Albania was opened. Many of them were painted by the brothers Zografi and master Onufri, famous throughout the Balkans.
